    Boiler will not shut off

An older (1977) Burnham America residential steam boiler will not shut off when the temperature goes above the thermostat setting. The thermostat was changed and got the same results(using mercury switch thermostats). Switch the power off and the boiler shuts down. Turn the power on and the boiler will not fire up until the thermostat calls for heat again. Then, again, will not shut down until the power is shut off. Has anyone seen this problem and know a solution to check out?

Call a pro. Shouldn't be too tough a problem

A steam boiler that will not stop firing after the thermostat tells it to stop firing is an unsafe boiler. I would stop using it and get it serviced ASAP.

Oil or gas fired? Makes a difference. Power pile or 24VAC system? Makes a difference. From what little info you've provided, I suspect it's gas fired and in that case, be plenty sure there's adequate water in the boiler until you can get a qualified service tech out to deal with the problem. In an ideal situation, the boiler should be operating when the tech arrives so he can easily find the problem.
