Im sure a lot has changed on the house since 1988 and im assuming the sizing of the air conditioner at the time may not have been done at today's standards. While you can sometimes replace an air conditioner with a like for like unit(size wise) that is typically not the correct way to do it as the house may now have more insulation, trees may be shading south and west facing windows now and air conditioners used to be commonly oversized. Oversized units cost more, perform worse, and have a higher probably of breaking down while not dehumidifying as well.

What is Father's location?
This is AC or heat pump?
Condenser is paired with air handler or furnace?
Post back.

A TTL is a straight AC condenser. Which I believe is probably a typo and is supposed to be TTR
To the OP (doke) you should have a contractor run a load calculation on the building to determine what size replacement system is needed. Often times a replacement system is smaller than the original as the original is too big, which cause extra energy consumption, and poor humidity removal.
A comparable replacement trane system would be in the XR line, or you can go higher efficiency and a lil better warranties with the XL line of equipment. If Guns Kill People, Do Pencils Misspell Words?

Seems like in the summer months it never shuts off and he has it cleaned. Thanks for all you guys help I really appreciate it!!

the electric heat is inside. A heat pump system would be best for replacement.
I would install a package heat pump if it where mine to do.If Guns Kill People, Do Pencils Misspell Words?

As far as i can see, this thread has come to a conclusion at this point.

Oaken
Just to be clear, what is your location?
You plan to replace both outside condenser and inside air handler for a complete matching system?
You are heating now with a heat strip? If so, do you know the size of the heat strip?
Depending on your location and winter climate, a heat pump system may be a better longtime choice than a straight AC system with strip heat only.
Post back.
