best cement/sealant for cast iron stove?
I have a 1977 vermont castings woodstove in my cabin. A few years ago I tore the whole thing apart and cleaned it out and put it back together. I used a gasket kit and furnace cement from a local fireplace shop. The furnace cement came in a caulk gun tube. I was not happy with the consistency of the product at all. It was like wet sand and was not "sticky" like the Pyroseal I use on boilers.
Now, 3 years later, the stove is starting to leak at many seams when I put it in heating mode and there is low draft. Last winter I had to use silicone on the outside of some of the leaky spots as an emergency repair.
Looks like I'm gonna have to tear it down and try again. This time I want to use the best sealant made for this application. What do the woodstove pros recommend?
