most folks dont respond well to things like "I know, do you?"
but 4L (fractional HP) and A belts are pretty interchangeable. there is little difference in the width. the b is bigger than eighter of the preceeding in regards to its width.
Now can you tell me the difference between the 5vx, and a b belt, and a 5vx from a c more specifically?

Get a Grainger book & look up the details for the belts, there are differences in pitch, width & such. Some of the belt makers also publish data that will help.

From weak to strongest and as you go up in strength it requires more tension.
4L - A - AX - 4VX
5L - B - BX - 5VX

As cg said, there is a difference of 2 inches in length. One is measured around the outer surface, the other is measured around the inner surface. Also the A belt has a deeper pitch or depth. Width is the same.

If I need a replacement belt, and there's an A-48 on it, I can use a 4L-500 just fine!

Since this is a trick question I'm going to say,
The difference is like water and ice.
It's all made of the same stuff it's just different.
Specifically, ice is just frozen water.

I needed a B belt, but beings none were available, I put the old trusty Autozone fan belt on it, still running 6 months later, and better sounding. Probably increased the cfm also.
If everything was always done "by the book"....the book would never change.
