    $75, wrecked paint job, + a free weekend=

So as the title says I had a free weekend a few dollars in my pocket and one ugly paint job that was falling off my old work truck. So what better to do than try out a "$50" paint job as seen on youtube right?

Been planning on getting it professionally painted but the abuse this ole girl gets from loading anything and everything from old air conditioners to hydraulic rams in the back and everything in between that will fit without falling out gets thrown in sooner or later. Just couldn't see spending that kind of money to have it beat up soon after.

So here is what a little sand paper, two quarts of Rustoleum primer, some acetone for thinner, and one gallon of gloss black Rustoleum oil based paint from Lowes will turn into. My Step Father has been painting his work trailers for years and they hold up great. Figured why not for the old truck as well. I can always strip it off and get it done right(?) if it doesn't work out.

The clear was flaking off or had just turned to dust everywhere. Here is a few before and afters. Paint is dry in the final pics but will take a week to fully cure before I can use a pollishing compound to get the rest of the shine on it.

Oh Yeah.. It was painted exactly where you see it in the picture. No paint booth needed.

Now I can see. Lol, a very good friend of mine owns a Paint and body shop, thats what we call 20/20, Looks good from 20ft at 20mph. Your clear coat was peeling and chipping because of a bonding issue, painting over bad paint is still gonna leave you with bad paint.

But hey, looks good for now

Rcb, you forgot the Armor-All on the tires.
The picture in my avatar is of the Houston Ship Channel and was taken from my backyard. I like to sit outside and slap mosquitos while watching countless supertankers, barges and cargo ships of every shape and size carry all sorts of deadly toxins to and fro. It's really beautiful at times.....just don't eat the three eyed fish....

I thought of that and 60 grit took all that old paint off pretty fast. Took everything down to the factory primer. No pics of it like that though. I just took a before just as I was working on the bed and the after when it was primed and then the paint. The truck was red from the factory then black from fact-o-bake I guess. For 75 bucks I won't complain much. This without any final wet sanding or pollishing came out pretty smooth and looking better than most all of the 800 dollar scuff and spray jobs I see coming out around here. In a week or so I'll wet sand and pollish. It's much better than it was before and if it lasts a year I can't complain. His trailers are painted the same way and are going on 5 years and still shine.

LOL They prodded me about that too.. I ended up taking some aluminum brightener and cleaned the wheels and wiped down the tires. This is a beat around truck.. can't be getting it spoiled with all that mess too often!

I don't think the paint and body profession is for me. The happiest part of the whole job was when I could throw the sanders back on the shelf, pop a few ibuprofens, open the beer, and sit in the hot tub to drown the hurt. I'll stick to HVAC! Thanks

Definitely getting all the factory garbage off was the best bet! So no clear coat, just the oil base black. Didnt realize you could buff that stuff out.

Good job, looks a lot better when you pull up to a customer. I'm sure they won't go out and inspect the truck up close. If they do tell them you did it yourself and how much it cost, and impress them with your resouresfulness.

Those quonset huts are clever. Are they made to be huts or are they adapted from something else.
