    Maybe.

    Welcome.
    State and local rules vary.
    Wholesaler policies vary.
    Contractor policies vary.

Did you wish to make it a lawn ornament? Not a problem. Otherwise, Local codes require a permit and they have a lot of rules that vary.

Finally, the terms of the warranty may void the warranty if you don't have it installed by a licensed contractor.

Bad idea. Stick to Garbage Pail Kids and California Raisins figurines from ebay and use local distributors for HVAC equipment.

It is clear in the installation book, if you purchase on line, warranty will be voided... Read instructions first, before you get yourself in troubles.

Most large department stores sell AC units and anyone can buy them.

EBAY! haha I am believe it or not getting more and more people like this. Just the other day a doctor did this to me "But I can buy it on EBAY for $600 less than what you are charging me" You go ahead and do it Doc. Don't call when you can't figure it out!

I've had 3 customers buy their own minisplits and we've installed them. We've also installed a few split system wine units for people. We don't take care of the warranty for them if they buy it is the only exception and we offer no labor warranty unless we did something wrong when installing.
I like DIY'ers. They pay better to fix.
