Irene knocked out my Weil-Mclain burner

    Hi All,

We finally got power back and the Weil-Mclain gold burner won’t fire.

Power is good to the Carlin 60200. Burner is stone cold. When I first turn on the electricity to the burner the 60200 will illuminate the amber LED that indicates “safe start check”. The LED will illuminate for about 5 seconds and then goes out. After that, nothing usually happens. Sometime I will hear the brief “whirring” sound that would normally occur just prior to the burner igniting. Sometimes not. But there are no other lamps illuminated indicating a lockout, etc.

Could a power surge have fried something with the electronics when we got our service back? We’ve lost power plenty of times and never had any burner re-start issues.

I would very much appreciate any tips on how to fix this problem… I’ve had 2 days of cold showers and can’t stand another!

    Thank you, Ed

In my experience, any board with a semiconductor mounted to it can be damaged by a power surge. Of course, putting protection against surges on the boards themselves raises the cost, so most electronic boards have no protection unless the design team believes it is needed.

This surge issue has become a large enough problem that whole-house surge protectors are becoming a worthwhile investment.

I would call your contractor and have him check the unit. I would advise against trying to fix this yourself.

We also have a map of our member pros. You can feel free to look and see if someone is in your area.

Thank you for the reply. I was just hoping there was an easy answer to a common issue.

I’m pretty handy, but no where near a pro. I understand the system's design, just not aware of a good troubleshooting guide.

I’ll search for the board member’s in my area (south shore of Boston).. Thanks for the tip.

    Thank you, Ed

You are welcome. Let us know how it works out for you.

And consider the whole-house surge supressor.

Ed, could be a number of things wrong, most likely your primary control, in MA you have to be a licensed oil burner tech to do any work on your burner.
Please call your oil co. or whatever certified tech you use, and if you haven't already, you should have a yearly clean and tune service performed.

    As an upgrade w/ cost?

Our electric company gave free suppressors to anyone who asked 3 years ago.
"Better tell the sandman to stay away, because we're gonna be workin on this one all night."

"Dude, you need more than 2 wires to a condenser to run a 2 stage heatpump."

    "Just get it done son."

That's something to research. The power co may offer the right suppressor, and they may offer something not as good.

I am always suspicious when the word "free" comes into play.
