I have a heat pump backed up by a gas furnace. I am replacing the furnace, and I have proposals for both 1 and 2 stage furnaces. With a heat pump in a duel fuel configuration, is a 1 stage preferable to a 2 stage furnace? I have heard that there can be overlap in the first stage and the heat pump (I live in Virginia).

Provided both furnaces are set up properly, the heat pump will never know if it's a 1 stage or 2 stage.

I'd pick 2 stage for the many benifits they have over the single stage.
