    "I thought I smelled something burning.."

    Customer said she heard a loud noise and smelled something burning. Breaker was tripped when I got there and found this. Was curious what caused it so I did a little searching on here and found this older thread. Post #11

    ya the PTC blew up, didn't know exactly what happened at the time. Came home and found that thread, then it all made sense.

    PTC = POS.

    PTCs get HOT while the unit runs. On top of that it's jammed inside an electrical box with no ventilation, a condenser unit under load, a contactor and capactor that run warm, sun beating on the cabinet and electrical box, possible semi-brown out operation....is it any wonder these things blow?

    There's been a PTC in my HP for 9.5 years. How long should one last?

    All that is wrong is that you let the smoke out. Put some new in and it will be fine

    I'd be interested to know if there was any secondary damage like to the other cap, contactor or wiring. In all my years I can't remember seeing one "blown up" like that.
    The picture in my avatar is of the Houston Ship Channel and was taken from my backyard. I like to sit outside and slap mosquitos while watching countless supertankers, barges and cargo ships of every shape and size carry all sorts of deadly toxins to and fro. It's really beautiful at times.....just don't eat the three eyed fish....
