So he installed a Goodman "dry" R22 condenser. Not just a compressor.

i had a friend of mine that had a 50 year warranty on roof shingles, well one blew off, the roof guy said, no problem we'll give you a brand new shingle,NO CHARGE, then gave him a legitamate bill to put on the new shingle on his very pitched roof!

Not intentionally. That's where the Trane vs. 'other' concern comes in.
The archaic unit outside that just kicked the bucket was so old it was installed by Moses. I have no idea who manufactured that one.
