I'll bet that worked really great for even airflow over the coil. I've seen this at least 4 times before.
The new a/h installed by coworkers. Field fab transition but can't see under insulation. Steam humidifier on backside.

Why is there insulation wrapped on plenum?
WTF kinda set-up was that?

two stage heat pump, R410. Insulation on plenum since all rest was insulated and those steam humidifiers can sometimes condense on the sheetmetal if the space is cold.

I went to one of our installs a few years ago. Old air handler & coil just like that. We weren't changing the air handler, just the heat pump & coil. Junior the salesman and boss's son & knucklehead installer were doing the job. Got there to find an A coil sitting in the bottom of the air handler where the V coil used to be. Bout had a stroke I was laughing so hard...
