Looked at a Rheem 2.5 ton packaged Heat Pump with a Scroll compressor. It runs fine when in cooling mode, but in heat it runs for five minutes and overheats. Makes a loud squeeling noise.

Reversing vaulve sounds good (energizes and depresses). High pressure peaks at 375 when this noise starts happening. Unit is a 2001 model.

Runs fine in cooling, you know the questions, super heat, sub cool, indoor wetbuld, outdoor ambient.

Any possibility it was over charged by someone else this summer, but the cooler outdoor temps now make the pressures look good.

before doing that, i would check the coil to see if it is dirty and of course,i would do this after checking the filter......your head pressure could be climbing because of one of the two or both...good luck....check registers to make sure you are moving enough air....ductwork changes made over the summer?......then if all check okay, recover, and vacuum system out....non-condensibles can cause same problem
