When my Trane XR90 starts up I hear a sound like a compressor or sump pump. The sound continues through the heat cycle. If I just turn the fan on I do not hear this noise. It is not the condensate pump. The furnace is in the basement and I can hear this pop pop pop pop sound on the second floor all be it faint. Any ideas???

It may be something with the combustion blower, get someone out to check it out.
If more government is the answer, then it's a really stupid question.

Yup, gotta be something with the inducer. Since Trane dumps flue condensate back into the inducer, they tend to splash around a lot of water. Not sure that would be a pop sound. Ductwork expanding as it warms and contracting as it cools could do that.
