Are there any benefits or pitfalls as a result of using fireproof insulation around the portion of the masonary chimney that passes through the unheated attic? The central chimney is in a saltbox colonial with three flues. One for each fireplace and one for the orphaned waterheater (properly sized using the rule of 7's).

probably not, most masonry chimmey's are cool -- they must be separated from any wood | combustables --harvest rainwater, make SHADE,R75/50/30= roof/wall/floor, use HVAC mastic, caulk all wall seams!
