    Blowing cold, but not strong

    Hi there,
I am a home owner, I've paid two techs in the last two days. My unit is sucking in 76 degree air and blowing 56 degree air, but its not blowing very strong. I noticed this morning, I work up at 4:30 AM and the AC was still running, the thermostat was set at 77... Any ideas? I am tired of keep paying for these service calls.

My unit is the inside unit is in the attic, 5 Ton system.

Thanks so much for your time.
    John

    Call

the HVAC service co. back and ask to speak to the service manager. Explain your situation to him and see if he/she has any suggestions. If you were my customer, I would be out with the service tech to further invetigate this. There may be an underlying problem somewhere that is intermittent. Good luck.

Maybe a duct came loose or if the duct is internally lined, a chunk of insulation could have come loose blocking airflow...

If it's returning 76° and the stat say's 77° my question might be, why is it running period? unless your using a setback program. If the "airflow" is decreasing during the run cycle, either the thing is beginning to freeze up some during that cycle, or the blower is slowing down, that should be a pretty simple thing for a tech to figure out.

Question- my furnace is 1998 Trane 5 ton Gas.
Do the newer furnaces that are made today have a stronger blower?

Well, I will say this, today we are having to install with our Ruud 3-ton systems, 4-ton furnaces to achieve the seer ratings. Yes, in my opinion the newer furnaces provide more airflow than the older ones, but I believe it's also in part due to the newer heat exchanger designs, which allow more airflow through the furnace.

We would need the model number off the furnace to see if it's a 5-ton furnace, was your existing a/c a 5-ton?

Yes, the old system was a 5 ton too... I am not at home, so I dont have the modle number. The old system system was a Trane 10 seer 1998... It could cool my house to 75 at any time in the summer, anytime of the day. This system wont go below 80 until 10:00 at night. Its a Goodman 5 Ton 13 seer 2011. Last night at 8:30 pm when the tech was there, it was blowing out 56 degrees and the returns were sucking at 76 degrees. BUT, the I cant get it to cool the house below 80 degrees??? Doesnt make sense... So frustrating.

Yes, don't make sense to me either, are you going off just what the stat reads? or have you taken some sort of thermometer and put it close to the stat to make sure it's accurate? these things can be mental also, meaning if the stat says 80° your believing this to be accurate, you need to verify this first. Did they change the stat when the a/c was changed out?
