I am in upstate NY and not really familiar with southern PA winters. Do heat pumps with electric (or gas?) back-up work out well there?

Outside of Philly they work fine!!!Newer ones much better than the old ones.
It's NOT the BRAND,it's the company that installs it!!!!!

Agreed...heat pumps are a hard sell to some here in PA, but they do very well here.

A dual fuel would do you well.
