It's called a ladder hoist. Lots of different kinds out there and you can buy or rent them. Google it.
The picture in my avatar is of the Houston Ship Channel and was taken from my backyard. I like to sit outside and slap mosquitos while watching countless supertankers, barges and cargo ships of every shape and size carry all sorts of deadly toxins to and fro. It's really beautiful at times.....just don't eat the three eyed fish....

Those ladder hoists were unsafe & downright dangerous.
They were all discontinued. You may be able to find a used one out there.
Think of the problems that may arise. If you drop a compressor 1/2 way up for any reason, your insurance company will not cover the loss because you were using outdated, unsafe equipment & methods. If someone gets hurt in the process, you're really screwed.

Hire a crane & be done, everybody goes home happy. The cost of the crane is passed on to the customer.
