Hi Guys,
First, I am not an HVAC guy, I am a Mechanical Engineer who knows very little about refrigeration beyond theory.
I have a boat (in southern california) that doesn't have refrigeration. I enjoy going on long range fishing trips into Mexican waters, but can't keep the fish I catch if I am more than a day from home. I need to install some kind of unit, preferably a 110 or 220 plug-in, without going into a zillion dollars, that will make ice from raw sea water. Is there a commercially available machine that will work on a rocking boat and produce around 100 pounds of ice per day. My boat is a 44' trawler and has several locations where I could install a refrigerator-size machine.
Lastly, anyone who is willing to give me good advice on this is welcome to a free fishing trip, airfare not included.
Thanks,
Gene

why does it have to be ice? why not run a freezer off the gen. you must already have if you have 110 or 220 ready to go. Less complicated
Making ice from raw sea water adds a few problems.

eta: Maybe you could get Seaice to make you a really small unit. It might be pricey but less then a zillion.
Common sense isn't very common anymore.
Search on "Eskimo Ice machine". You will have to provide drinking quality water. You don't want the bother of making sea water ice. Too many good reasons to have regular quality ice.
From my experience, if you think you only need 100 lbs per day I would recommend at least a 300 lb/day flaker.
These from IceSea would seems to fit the bill:

They have an option for seawater ice, but I would expect you would have far fewer problems if you were to use a fresh water supply for the ice and seawater for the refrigeration only. Poor water quality is the primary reason for icemaker failures.
Seawater ice is often considered better for storing fresh caught fish, but consider 100 gallons of fresh water will produce around 800 lbs of flake ice. A machine which is down due to crappy water produces no ice.
Here's a link to the Eskimo machine mentioned earlier:

Yes, just what I had in mind: ICESEA. Thanks Icemeister! And, thanks to all the truly COOL guys who responded. The small unit looks like it will be perfect.
Also, just for those who are interested in the fine details of my dilemma, the reason I can't use a freezer is because, in California waters, the Dept of Fish and Game requires that fish be kept whole for identification and sizing purposes. That means that once the fish is frozen, say a 100 lb tuna, in order to fillet it later at home, it has to be defrosted, filleted and then re-frozen. Not only a lot of trouble, but detrimental to the product.
Thanks again to all who responded.

Either one of them. try for a flaker or Scotsman makes a nugget machine. They will handle the boat environment. Have a few on small commercial fishing boats here on the North coast. They do fine with sea water, but just make sure you use a water filter. The best ones I've seen are the cartridge type filters with string or paper filters. You'll have to clean the water level probes more often than using fresh water, but they'll do you a good job.
One way to outthink people is to make them think you think. They'll think you're not really thinking what you're trying to get them to think you think...........
*** Hey Ive got 2 used 600 lb/ day Eskimo Ice makers that were recently removed from 2 sport fishing vessels getting generators installed for south america if you are interested.. They are in perfect working order and can be bought cheap... Let me know if you are interested. I can also answer any install questions as I also work at a full yacht repair/ refit center.. Good Luck!!
