that is scarry. have someone give you a price for new ductwork. this way you will give the cooling you need
We just purchased this house about 3 months ago and the electric bills seem to be very high even for this time of year. The a/c unit seems to run longer than normal. I'm wondering if the transition to the supply vents coming from the air handler should be this small. It's a 5ton ruud unit and it is 6 yrs old. I've included a picture. Probably should be on the wall of shame as bad as this ductwork looks. How should this be fixed by a pro..

According to Rheem, it is supposed to have 3 feet of straight duct the same size as the furnace bonnet (opening).
Yes, it is that small.
(Do a search for static regain.)
Do not let them attempt to oversize the plenum next to the furnace.
Once you get the ductwork corrected, have your contractor check the refrigerant charge, regardless of whether it is a heat pump or straight cooling.
It likely has struggled from startup.
You may have lost some heating elements also, due to poor airflow.
Make sure they take a good close look at the other end of the furnace.
The return air duct and filter must be large enough. If not, you still won't get proper airflow.
Get them to inspect the indoor coil for dirt while they are up there. It may need a good cleaning.

Is the heat the type where the elements are around the blower? If so this might be right.

Thanks..The model of the air handler is UBHA24J21SFGAI . The unit has a new coil as it was replaced the day we moved in..Return air on the other end matches up fine. It is an electric heat unit.. I've replaced the filter a couple of times.

Sorry read the wrong numbers from writing. Should have the right number now..
Looks like time for a new duct system. Please have a pro check the whole system out. If the duct is hacked there may be other things that may be done wrong and a hazzard.

I'd wait for our doc holiday to reply.
There are tabs inside that small duct, which is the correct size, not length ,that needed to be bent up.Since they attempted to use the correct size small duct they likely bent them up.
Doc is a "green team"/Rheem guy, well respected here, and I think he said the cfm loss, tabs bent is not as bad as some of us might think.
If you want his opinion sooner, repost with Doc holiday and Rheem in the subject line.
Thanks..I'll wait and see if Doc replies as well. if not I'll repost.

I'm not Doc, but I have installed a few of these and yes 3 feet is recommended before transition, but the "book" does allow for shorter lengths....not as short as what that is though, in order to have proper static.....that appears to be flex duct takeoffs and they should have easily been located further down the line and the smaller duct should have been extended a mininum of 18 inches....looks like a wham, bam, thank you maam install to me.
Thanks for the help..I've called a few places and I hope I get someone as competent as ya'll that have responded.
thanks
