what happens when you front seat the discharge service valve on a compressor while it is running?

The head pressure will go through the roof and more than likely, the compressor will trip on the O/L. You can front seat the king valve to pump the refrigerant into the reciever, but with a discharge valve the refrigerant doesn't have anywhere to go and it could hurt you and/or the compreswsor so don't do it.

Are you sure you mean discharge or did you mean liquid. There's a huge difference in what happens.

Most compressors equiped with a discharge service valve have a H.P. controll. If it is a tin can is probabley has an internal pressure relief.
