Chiller work

Ok here is the deal I'm about to start working for a service company that does work on chillers.Just wanted to see what tools will I need. I already have my basic hand tools since I have being work as service tech for sometime.

what type of chillers ? when I think of chillers I autmatically think large tonnage water cooled centrifagul by York, Trane, Carrier, McQuay.

What have you been doing and what tools are basic. I have over 10,000 in tools and think of those as basic . LOL

They will large ton water cooled machines. I have being working working an large ton rooftops an splits systems.

You will need a large vacuum pump, i recommend at least a 10cfm.

You will need pressure gages with adapters for peets plugs so that you can take pressure drops across barrels.

I would also get some o-ring grease for changing oil filters, impact gun for dropping heads, and spare brushes for a tube machine. I would also recommend a few pinch bars for lining up bolt holes on flanges.

Other than that you will need to start collecting heavier duty tools in larger sizes.

I think that I'd get there and get some experience, first. Then you'll pick up what you need a little at a time. If they expect you to hit the ground on a dead run and when you don't even know what tools you need to work with, somebody's in for a rude awakening.....

agreed. you need to spend some time on gathering IOM's, engineering bulletins, etc.

tools will come. as for getting a few quickly, maybe better electrical meters, higher amperage/larger jaw clamp meter, etc.

From an old chiller man, FIRST, you will need a good strong back, and set of knees..........
Second you will need to understand what God gave you;
TWO eyes, TWO ears, and ONE mouth, use them in proportion of each other.......
Third, a great pair of work boots, with great suport in them. See jumpin down off those machines over the years and your feet take a beating, end up with torn ligiments if ya don't thave good boots, makes for a bad day wakin up and takin those first steps......... see if I can spell if half way close:

Old man taught me to work with your head not your back, Ya think that head end is not tooo heavy, but when ya go to get up next day, ya shoudl have used a hoist !!!!

My best to ya in the chiller yard, I feel its a dieing bread, so give it time and learn all ya can, once in the brain they can't take it away from ya........

Hek, ya want tools get ready to do re-tubing, see what a few of those babby's run ya !!!

Dont worry about your arm length ..... they will grow in time and you will qualify as one of "those knuckle draggin chiller guys " .........just like the rest of us ....lol

As for the poster, "You have 2 ears and 1 mouth, listen twice as much as you speak." Invest in yourself, grab and read all the literature on the chillers you can. The company is not obligated to train you, but they are willing if you show willingness to learn.
I have learned that everyone wants to be a chiller mechanic, but not everyone is willing to put in the effort required to be a chiller mechanic. It's not an 8 hour day. It's whatever it takes to get her back on line.

It would. Things are going really good. It was 115 today in Tucson but only about 113 with the wind chill.
