I am looking at some new homes in the area and one advertises a 4 inch media filter. What is this a big deal?

It filters the air better, and is less restrictive to air flow, so it doesn't harm the heating or cooling system.
They last longer then 1" pleated filters

A 1" pleated air filter, can be 3 or more times as restrictive to air flow.

If they thought to use a 4" filter maybe they have a better than average A/C & heating system.

4" permits Full Flow if you do not use
Very High Efficiency ( >60% or MERV 15)
    filter and will last longer.

    Any additional unique features?
    i.e.
    Variable Speed Air Handler?
    U/V Lights?
    Electronic Air Cleaner?
    Dehumidifier?

Yes they have a 14 seer Trane vairable speed Trane unit. I have read on here and think I want vairable speed air handler but just didn't know about the 4 inch media filter. Sounds like a better deal. You know sometimes you just don't know if what a salesman is telling you is true or not. Thank you for the respones.

The 4" media filters help to keep out more dirt from the air but also from the rest of your heating/cooling system. Fan Motor, coils and supply duct are kept cleaner. This helps keep performance up. ie coils cleaner and fan motor running better from less dirt buildup. I don't push Electronic air Cleaners(although they are effective) only because most customers don't, won't or can't clean them on a regular basis.

Though they are less restrictive than ,a 3M 1" pleated, don't just add one to a duct system, without testing the static(resistance),to be sure air flow will still be adequate .

I have a Carrier Infinity system with a 5" media filter and am very happy with it. It has definately cut down on the amount of dust in my home. I change the filters about every 6 months and it is amazing how much dirt they catch.

If you do service, you see the difference immediately. The systems with the 4-5" media filters that are changed regularly have spotless blower housings and wheels. Every time I service a unit with a 1" standard filter or especially an electronic air cleaner, the blower wheel and blower compartments are dirty.
