Yesterday, we updated our earthquake kit. We have K rations, enough fresh water for a week (jugs are good for two years), water purification tablets, flashlights, emergency blankets, tool kit, first aid kit etc.
We also have our camper with 110 watts of solar power and propane fridge if it makes it through a quake.
    Can you last a week?

It's good to be prepaired. I keep bottles of water and candles and kerosene lamps for such occasions.

Unfortunately, if something as devastating as what is happening in the Gulf of Mexico, all of these provisions are swept away right from the get go.

I'm not talking about the Hurricane specifically

Wherever you live, you are subject to some type of disaster whether it is tornadoes, floods, hurricanes, fire, mudslides, etc. If I lived in tornado alley I sure as hell would build myself one heck of a basment shelter.
9 years ago, there was a blizzard that downed power lines and crippled my city. I have a stockpile of wood if that happens again, and my next purchase will be a Honda EU2000 portable generator. Maybe I should buy a chainsaw should a tree block my way if my truck is moblie.
What about designating a person from out of your province or state to phone and check in if you are seperated from your loved ones?
My point is to look forward as to what you can do for your own family.

Just bought a couple cases of ammo...

Shortwave radio, batteryless. (Is that a word???)

    Water for a month, actually.

Food is a sore spot. Gotta do something different than 60 cans of tomato sauce...

Been thinking a lot about the whole survival thing lately, really.

We still have enough MREs from last year to last the two of us over a week.

Those things are really pretty good and have quite a variety.

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — In the face of a catastrophic Hurricane Katrina, a mandatory evacuation was ordered Sunday for New Orleans by Mayor Ray Nagin.

Acknowledging that large numbers of people, many of them stranded tourists, would be unable to leave, the city set up 10 places of last resort for people to go, including the Superdome.

The mayor called the order unprecedented and said anyone who could leave the city should. He exempted hotels from the evacuation order because airlines had already cancelled all flights.

Gov. Kathleen Blanco, standing beside the mayor at a news conference, said President Bush called and personally appealed for a mandatory evacuation for the low-lying city, which is prone to flooding.
    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

What would have happened if President Bush didn't make that call, and why did the city and the state governments wait till sunday.

I'm preparied if New York or Philadelphia get hit with a catastrophy and there is a mass exodus. Looters would be target practice

We keep a hurricane kit. Flashlights candles, 12 5 gal gas cans 6 5 gal water jugs, generator, battery powered TV and 2 5000btu window units to run off the generator....(too keep wifee poo happy). and of course the shotguns and pistols to keep unwanted pest out of the house. and other such stuff. Last year we realized that we had forgotten hand can openers...so added them to the kit this year.

Born and raised here in Florida so always had a hurricane kit in the closet/garage.
