Where to put the New Orleans garbage?

Ok, since many many (many) square miles, thousands of houses etc are all garbage. Where are people going to haul this rubble off to?

I know it's kind of putting the cart ahead of the horse right now to be thinking of this, but I'm curious.

That will make great landfills.

They usually separate the vegetation debris (trees, etc), demolition material and garbage. The trees and such get piled up locally in parks and other public properties awaiting mulching. The rest goes to the regular land fills and temporary Mt. Trashmores.

Not always, and usually not in the near future. 10 years after Andrew there were still piles, very large piles of debris stacked up on lots right in the middle of Homestead. During Charley last year wiped out the town of Port Charlotte and Punta Gorda. After a year of rebuilding there are still piles everywhere. The landfills couldn't handle it and can take only so much at a time. They burn alot of the debris but then enviromentolists complain of the pollution the smoke produces. The wreckage will be seen there for years and years to come.

That's quite possibly due to FEMA money being cut off. That happened here last year. The city didn't want to do anything that wasn't federally subsidized.

I'm beginning to wonder if New Orleans will ever recover. Who & why would anyone want to move back? They have nothing to go back to. Might as well begin a whole new life elsewhere.

While this is logical thinking, it doesn't address the fact that the majority of property in the city is privately owned and those owners have rights.

The government would have to condemn the entire city and take it by eminent domain for the betterment of the city and offer it up to developers...........wait, this is starting to sound familiar.

they could still own their property it would just be 40' higher.

With all the money pouring in why not buy brooms and cleaning supplies and hire those outside of the superdome? You got it bud, you want money? Go back in and clean it up.


It's dirty work but then they can begin on the rest of the city, a block at a time working with the city, state, whatever. They need work, the young and strong, man or woman, just like back in the depression. People jumped at the chance to work back then. WPA and all the rest of the projects. Many still exist today with a marker.

So lets put these sunburnt individuals to work.

They could make work camps rather than refugee (oops, can't call them that, it is evacuees.) sites. Why let em all sit around and compain about the rations?

Why not take all that trash and use it to re-pack and rebuild the levies?
