I posted this question on the fireplaces forum, but didn't get a response, so I'll try here: Do gas fireplaces have firing rates that can be adjusted like on gas furnaces?

Most have an adjustable flame. The gas control valve has a knob that can be turned to adjust the flame height. Some remote controls have the capability to adjust the flame height or it can be done manually.
The best thing to do is set it to a medium flame height and leave it there to prevent sooting.
The firing rate for example might be 35000 btuh. This is with the maximum flame height. But as far increasing beyond the maximum firing rate listed on the rating plate; The answer to that is NO.
