Seen it here too, it usually happens on a vacant store. That way no one realizes it for a while, by which time nobody can remember who might have been hanging around in the area or have an exact date it happened.

Chopped copper right at compressor, they left the evap. The 22 condensor they got, power was still hot, how they did that without tripping breaker blows me away...

I wonder, does insurance cover something like that?

@ggold - did you take a picture of the owner's facial expression when you broke the news?

    depends on your coverage.

Last 3 residential units that got stolen, and I replaced, were covered by insurance.

I'm doing 6 condenser/coils at a rental apartment building, covered by insurance.

I had to replace 4 brand new units, installed during a construction project. Covered.
"Better tell the sandman to stay away, because we're gonna be workin on this one all night."

"Dude, you need more than 2 wires to a condenser to run a 2 stage heatpump."

    "Just get it done son."

WOW! Never seen that... Only ever called for a missing 2 ton condenser at a rural shop. It was the hottest time of the year. The guy left most of the piping and wire. I think he just wanted some air conditioning. Never did get a call for a hook-up

What can be done to prevent it from happening again? Video surveillance?
Is this a Fabreze moment? C.Y.D. I'm voting white elephant. 2¢.

Maybe do not connect the ground wire...

Seriously... Around here folks build and install cages around condensers... also there are alarms attached to low pressure switches... some of them are wired into the alarm system.

IMO the solution lies in how folks can sell scrap CO... In GA, if you do not have an HVAC license, the check is mailed to the address on your driver's license... no license, no payment.

We all pay for it in the long run.
They scrap it ship it to China they melt it and make a crapy reversing valve and sell it back.
Too bad the copper stub he cut off didn't hang up in his shirt when he flung it off the roof, it might of took him with it.

Never seen a rooftop package unit stripped! I've seen several residential units, and a few commercial condenser units that were on the ground out back robbed, but that is ridiculous! I bet the owner was mad as hell.

The thieves are really gutsy around here.
An Office Depot on the SE side of town, got hit while they were open for business. In the middle of the day!!! Buy the time it got hot inside, these guys were long gone.

A closed down walmart here had 18 rooftop units stripped out.

Most likely aint crack coming back...because in reality it never left....

The problem today is meth....its cheaper than crack and is just as highly addictive.

The worst I have seen up here, was someone took and ice pick to 18 new condenser coils on RTU's. Lots of work, to change them out.

i think it is time that they stop the scrap yard from buying coils unless they come from a licensed company
