HVAC jobs in Southwestern Ontario?
Hey everyone I'm looking to get into the field in southwestern Ontario but finding out stuff is fairly dried up. I tried just getting hired on as a laborer or apprentice but no one would just take a guy out of high school with no experience and risk setting him up. Most service managers i talked to told me to get my Gas tech ticket and go from there so i did some number crunching and the night school courses for G3 and G2 weren't too much cheaper then a 2 year diploma program where I would get some hands on experience as well as the gas license . Well here I am after 2 years at Fanshawe a G2 and ODP with some basic shop experience like install/trouble shooting.Anyways having a fairly rough start to the job hunt every place either has ratio issues or is just slow at the moment or doesn't want to take people fresh from school. I realize I will have to start from the bottom and work my way up but that just how life goes and I am ready for that. Maybe things will turn around as the economy gets going i hope.
Anyone have any insight into the future or am I doomed to ever get my foot in the door?
Thanks in advance
Wes

This year was the slowest I've seen, it was getting real bad. It is just starting to turn back around with this nice weather that we're having.
Once companies get busy with all the ac installs they will need help, especially if it is a hot summer like Environment Canada says it's going to be.

Very hard to find work in southwestern Ontario at this time. Second career funding for the last 5 years toward the HVAC industry, has saturated the job market with G2's.
All I can say is make sure your resume is perfect and stands out with a well written short cover letter, also apply in person rather than by e-mail.

College courses for HVAC programs in the GTA are now difficult to get into. The last I heard colleges are getting approx. 600+ applications for 60 spots in the program. Hard to believe that when I got into this trade just 10 years ago, they were cancelling classes due to a lack of applicants.

Definitely get your G2, because as Draffip said, the market is flooded with these graduates who have G2's, and that's the minimum you need to compete with when you're out looking for work.

thanks guys ...it should get better i mean alot of the second career guys have either gotten back to their jobs or different ones ..factories are back hiring and i heard the enrollement for colleges and the fast track ones were way down. I guess its all about just keeping on it and renewing my gas tech 2 and keeping up to date on the stuff.

Don't give up, you'll get something eventually. Also second career funding has stopped for the HVAC industry, so let's hope things turn around.
