    MrBillPro made a statement earlier about a system where the condenser was inside the attic with the hot air vented to the outside. I cannot comment on the efficiency claims but can verify this system exist. It is found mostly in commercial applications. It is referred as a "Single Package Horizonal Unit". There is actually duct work for the condenser seperate from the conditioned space ductwork. A description and a picture of this design can be found in the following book:
