I am buying a new central AC. I have been told that R-22 is being phased out and to get a R410A system by one installer. The other told me R-22 is more efficient, and if it needs repaired you can use R417A as a replacement if necessary with no consequences to the equipment. It is fully compatible. Any opinions?

If your set on this guy installing it, you better get the R-22 because it doesnt sound like he has a clue about R410A and odds are he would mess it up.

Following up on Doc's comments, I would think twice about someone installing my system if they are not 'up to speed' on what is and isn't current, and what will and won't work. Remember that the installation is as important as the installer, if not more so.

how long has this installer been doing this, because the answer about the r22 being more efficent is somthing someone new would say or some one that has no idea what they are talking about, 410a is the better refrigerant, it saturates the coil better then r22 does, and as for more efficent im a carrier dealer, we can make our 410a systems achive up to 19.5 seer, ask this guy to show you an r22 system that can do that, i would definitly say go for the 410a, its more efficent and plus r22 is going to start going up in price r22 equiptment will stop being produced in 2010 not to far from now your going to see r22 go up just like r12 did, and for this other refrigerant that this guy is talking about no manufacturer has approved this yet that i know of but i know york is looking into somthing like that for their systems but 410a is the way of the future but i would maybe getting some second opinions from some other contractors and maybe forget this guy

replacement for r22?
to add to this, i have heard that 410 is not necessarily the sure replacement for r22. at this point in time, the only sure thing is that r22 is being phased out. is this true?
also, i have heard that the systems installed with 410 have been having a lot of problems, whereas this is not happening with 22. is this true?
