Time for a change

Hello everyone,

I found this site today while searching for info on how to get into HVAC. I worked 15 years as a Communications Technician in industrial and commercial environments and the last 5 as a Maintenance Director at a Senior Living Community, and I have decided that it is time to change it up and start a new carreer.

I am getting things in order to start a year program for HVACR at the local adult education center. I am hoping to find a contractor to work with or I may just stay at my current job until I complete my schooling and get certified, but I really hope for the former rather than the latter. (This is not a solicitation for employment). I know a guy in the trade, I plan to see if he can help me out, and I'll provide free labor to ride along to some jobs.

I have always been intrigued by air conditioning, and miss doing service work, so I hope this will be the thing for me.

I do not know a lot about the trade yet, but I am really trying to learn all I can. I did replace the furnace in my house in 2005 with no help, maybe I'll post it in the hall of shame, lol.

I am experimenting with automobile A/C at the moment, and I really hope that my friend in the business will let me work with him and his guys on my days off.

I'm going to work on my post count so I can read in the pro section. So far I really like this forum; seems like the mods run a tight ship.

It is a good trade! I love the work, hate the bullpoop.
Big difference in auto A/C and residential. Auto A/C is dynamic, constantly changing with the reves of the engine. Even experienced A/C guys can get in trouble with that....Keeps us on our toes.....

I read that thread, and all I can add is that it is not just the HVAC industry, the ideals portrayed are in every industry that I know of. I am only hoping that being seasoned to the workforce will be in my favor, HVAC experience or not.
One thing I do have going for me is great pride in my work, willingness to succeed and excel, hunger for knowledge and desire to be the best I can. What gets me in trouble is that I expect the same from others.

As for AC controls, I will research it, thanks for the tip!
