I installed a Rheem 3 Ton 12 Seer heat pump for a customer & now they are having a problem with the outdoor unit making a loud squealing noise during the night. They say it doesn't do it all the time & that its not the fan motor. I installed a 12 seer air handler also so the system is matched up properly.I did a load calculation & I know that everything is properly installed. I was wondering if anyone could possibly give me any info that might help. I haven't been able to troubleshoot the problem as the unit will not do it all the time. I am thinking that it might be the metering device because that specific unit shuttles the reversing valve in the heat mode. I appreciate any help given!

T-stat
Why would there be a call for use of heat modeOriginally posted by knucklebuster

in the last 3 weeks?
T-stat set-up / wired correctly?
Why would there be any noise?

Id look at that fan motor more closely. I doubt seriously its your reversing valve...its not energised in the ac mode with rheem. Could be the t stat but would be strange to only be happening at night.

It also wouldn't be the metering device as it only works in the heating mode. Unless your in Greenland.

The unit was installed about 2 weeks ago. I know the reversing valve is not energized in the cooling mode. What I am wondering about is if it was the fan motor it seems to me it would do it all the time, like the bearing in the motor might be getting hot & making this loud squealing noise. It seems like if it was getting this hot though, it would be tripping something. Any help would be appreciated.

could be the condenser fan motor. if the bushings are tight. it probably is happening durning the day just to much going on and noone hears it. at night everything is quite and the noise is more profound so they hear it more
i would replace the motor and see

A fan motor that will squeak at night should do it in the day. It is either due to a mechanical problem or pressure equalizing. On the mechanical side you have 2 moving parts. The fan motor and the scroll in the compressor other than a relay. One thing to do is look what is near the condenser that may be to blame but they are blaming what is new.

Id rather you consider the compressor's check valve is not holding. The reversing valve on a Rheem doesnt cycle in and out like others in the cooling mode.

I am inclined to lean towards a bleed back when unit shuts off. - I would cycle the reversing valve from cool to heat & back a few times and if that did not show up something, then as Doc said, look to a check valve.
Hope this helps,
Richard
