I have a two story home appr. 2700 sf. I have a return in the upstairs hallway appr. 50" X 24". When I put a new filter in the force of the suction will literally suck the filter out of my hand if I let is go. Is this an indication of being undersized or normal. I do not have any returns downstairs, mainly due to access. Thanks for any advise.

You really should call in a professional. Until someone looks at the system it is purely speculation on our part. Fixing one problem only to create another is not doing you any favors. All we can do here is speak in very broad generalities.

    Grab the filter ...

Filter area of 1200 Square Inch
    (~ 8 square feet or FOUR 24"x 24" filters)
    is MORE THAN Adequate!

    One Carrier 5-ton:
    2,000 CFM/8 S.F.= 250 FPM Face Velocity
    which is quite Low.

Hopefully, more than 2 Square Feet flow area of hard duct
runs from the return grilles/filters to the Air Handler/ furnace.

Depending on what type of filter you are using your grill size could be to small. Using standard filters it would be alright for 5 tons but not using some of the pleated filters available.

Dan, it would be 2 not 4 24x24 filters.
