About ten years ago there was a song about a band that never played.
I can remember a lot of the words and how it went but for the life of me cant remember the name or artist.

Was sort of a late 80's acoustics grunge sound, talked about a band that was trying to come up with a gimmick?
Their gimmick turned out to be they didn’t play.

In the song they became famous, made a hit album (with no music just dead air) went on MTV live, didn’t play anything just smashed stuff up...Rolling Stone said they were geniuses.

Well, you get the picture. I found the lyrics to be very funny and true in today’s “be a follower, even though its dumb” type of world.

Anybody have any idea of the song I am thinking of?

Dont get caught up on the grunge part, just doing my best to describe it. Was popular when MTV live was taking off...

Vicious Pink would kick the Violent Femmes butts... if either of them knew how to play pool.

    I know everything.

Well, not really. But I did remember the refrain to the song, and googled it.
