My son is getting ready to replace a system in his townhouse.
The Copeland Scroll UltraTech features two stage operation where the first stage works at 67% of full load. About a month ago, someone here said that some scroll compressors have the first stage working at about 80% of full load. True?
What HVAC brands use the Copeland at 67% and what brands run at other specified loads? And if there are 80% models, what are the good reasons for that split? The 67% seems to make more sense to me.
Don't know of an 80% model. Maybe the poster was mistaken.

All of the Copeland 2 stage scroll compressors operate at 67% capacity in 1st stage.
Trane and some other manufacturers operate the fan at 80% in first stage in thier 2 stage scroll systems. Some manufacturers match the airflow more closely to the 1st stage compressor capacity.
If more government is the answer, then it's a really stupid question.

Are there any scroll OEMs other than Copeland for residential HVAC?
Scrolls are made by all the comp makers. Don't know of anyone using Tecumseh scrolls in residential but certainly Bristol/Benchmark/Scroll Tech and Alliance (A-S/Trane/Heatcraft/Copeland). Alliance makes an unloading scroll like the Copeland. I don't think Scroll Tech which is a joint venture between Bristol & Carrier/Carlyle does yet.
Dont confuse the compressor capacity with the system capacity. The copeland two stage is an unloading compressor and drops the capacity of the compresor to 67%. The system as a whole may be closer to 70 ot 75%. Its not linear.
