    12,000 btu's is one ton so we have 12 for one ton in short form. Most manufacturers will use the short form in their model number to tell us what tonnage a piece of equipment is as is the case with your coil, 42 equals 3 full tons (12 and 12 and 12) and one half ton (half of 12 is 6) so 12 plus 12 plus 12 plus 6 is 42.
