if you have the funds to change it now would be a good time
Hi,
My current ac is 18 years old Magic Chef CJK (?). The outside fan just stopped working.
Should I just get the fan changed? Or should I get the entire ac changed, since it is near its end of life?
Thanks.

Sould I chose a 10 seer for the next 18 years, or an
much more expensive 13 seer?
For 13 seer, the airhadler will have to be changed also.
You shouldn't reuse an 18 year old air handler whichever you buy.
Where are you? What size equipment? What is your cost per kwh?
Around here, a 13 SEER system today tends to have about a 15-20 year breakeven point. Good investment? If your financial planner suggested something like that you'd fire him. But in many areas, 13 SEER is a wise move. So don't let anybody tell you what to do without knowing local costs & conditions. Many on here think everyone should have 19 SEER! They are thinking of the commission check or profit they'd make selling it to you
What is a Magic Chef CJK anyway? I don't see the brand anywhere.
I don't think I can breakeven for a 13 seer, instead of a 10 seer. My concern is that after 2006, the 10 seer could not be repaired anymore, right?
there will be plenty of parts available.
FILL OUT YOUR PROFILE!!
CJK is a model line. No problems if you buy 10 SEER! Some salesmen are trying to scare people into buying higher SEER by calling 10 SEER obsolete which may make them think they shouldn't buy it.
I got a quote for a complete trane system: 3ton AC, 80% Furnice for $3216.
Cooling: Trane XB 1000 TTB036C
Heating: Trane TUE080A936K*
10 year parts. 1 year labor.
Fair deal?

i'd worry more about the quality of the install than the price. yeah it's easy for me to say that but if the install is crap is any price a good deal ? also don't worry about the kind of equipment worry about the quality of the contractor. let us know what part of the country your in there's a lot of great contractors on here that could give you a estimate.
I live in central New Jersey (Mounmouth county). I'd appreciate a good recommendation. But why the installer is so important? I am only replacing the old system and it should be a EASY job, isn't it?
Yes easy to take to take shortcuts, and your money, and leave you with a mess. Then you'll be back here trying to sort it all out.
First, delete the price, its not allowed here.
Second, we charge more then that for a Luxaire, same capacity.
If the installer is sloppy with his install, then the new system might not work as well as the old one, let alone last as long.
