Damn; that report is covering all bases of speculation as to what may have happened. Lightning strike, overshot the runway, tail damage, tires blowing out, engine fell off and so on...

what i want to know now is, who pays to clean up the mess?Ontario taxpayers! I say send the bill to Air France it was their stupid pilot who decided to land in a zero-visibility thunderstorm.

lightning strike at landing caused all system failure, no brakes so it ran out the runway

probably the GTAA who runs the airport, its part of the cost of taking a flight out of any airport. yes maybe the other services will come out of the taxes but hundreds of planes land in that everyday, but not all get hit by lightning

Since no fatalities and only minor injuries a radio dj said, "Why do they have a ravine at the end of the runway. Why not an uphill slope (Like skateboarder use) so the plane can roll up and back down." Ya.

I say why isnt the ground just flat at the end of the runway. I guess us 'Canucks' dont know how to build an airport either. LOL

The AC have redundant systems, if they lose electrical power they still have simple hydralics to stop with, the anti-lock system won't work though and in bad weather is when it's needed the most. AC have autobrakes and can be set to brake at various levels depending on landing weight and runway length during touchdown.
The AC was slowing but not enough to stop before running off the apron. It was mentioned that his landing speed seemed sorta high.
I would have to think if that revine wasn't there this accident would have been alot worse.

Hmmmm... I wonder how long the flat grassy plains of Ontario should extend past the runways...Hmmmm.

Woulda bin a real sight watchin this jumbo jet wipe out a Sleep Country, a Sealtest and a Purolator Truck not to mention the 2 bus loads of Asian gamblers headed to Casino Niagara as it crossed the 401 into the industrial park.

I kinda like the suggestion about skyward ramps though... Don't they have them in the western mountians just in case your rented U-haul brakes fail?

the guy that mentioned it was a passenger, I'll be honest, I'd have no frickin clue if it was too fast or not, easy to say when there is a problem

he did follow up with " but I'm not an aviator or anything"

It would have been alot worse if hte rravine wasnt therre. 30 would have died on the highway when everyone piled up if the plane was any closer.

OPP (ontario provincial police) take care of the highway and they had responded to 3 accidents in the area by the time I was on the road at 5 this morning.
