    I have a 28y/o 3.5ton "Heat Controller" split system in my 2100sqft home.

    1) There is no TXV (or bulb) or AXV visible on the copper lines leading to the A-Coil. Does this mean it is a Capillary Tube system, or could a TXV & bulb be mounted inside the ductwork near the A-coil?

    2) Assuming Capillary tube... The original installer failed to stamp the proper refrigerant charge level on the nameplate. For charging-by-weight, can the charge level be accurately calculated by adding the compressor charge on the nameplate, the A-coil charge on the name plate and allowing a specified level of charge for the length of the copper lines? Or should the superheat method be used instead?

    3) Could the refrigerant lines be coiled around each other to provide heat exchange between the suction and liquid lines? This should increase total superheat inthe suction line and increase subcool in the liquid line. The additional subcool should help reduce gas flash in the liquid line, shouldn't it? If it is this simple, then why would there not be such a device in the refrigerant lines? Assuming the change in the friction in the capillary tube was accounted for...

    4) My condenser is right up against the wall with one of the coil sides less than 8" from the wall. Moving it would require the refrigerant to be recovered, the lines to be disconnected, the pad and condenser to be moved about 12" and then efevrything hooked up and charged again... Roughly how long should this take, and would it be worth it in terms of efficiency?

    2. Charge by superheat

    3. Nobody calls for it

    4. If the unit lasted 28 years this way, leave well enough alone til it quits.

    leave it be
    to mess with a system this old would be a big mistake

    It is very possible that the txv is located within the housing of the AH and you maybe unable to tell without taking off a panel.

    Cap tube or fixed orifice....superheat

    TXV...subcool

    Dont move it! 28 yers old and still running! You dont need to move it. I have a feeling it will let you know soon when it wants to be moved.
    1)No cap tube
    2)Charge by subcooling and superheat
    3)Putting the lines together can help sometimes(not on this system)
    4)28 yrs old why worry about efficiency. Leave it be!
