have you tried the adkins diet??
Ya I can see that being they didnt make anything off me. Looking in the mirror Im starting to think Im the poster child for fast food. I look back at pictures of me when I use to be able to crawl thru 14" web trusses in the finished basement ceilings of houses we were covert from electric to gas. I gotta do something better then what Im trying being I try not to eat too much during the day, keeping it light but I always catch myself eating something late being I feel hungry. I hear a lot that try not to eat after 6, I might try that. switch to diet pop being in the summer I drink so much water that I really need something a little differant to have with meals but it sure seem like the diet pop makes me hungry. I kinda wonder if there isnt something to that . Sorry just venting being everywhere I walk by a mirror I get pissed at what I have let my body change to and how I have proved to myself how little self control I have as far as being able not to eat things that setting aroung that I can shove in my mouth. I always went by the idea of not having it there so you cant eat it. Girlfriend goes by the idea that she wants it around so if she feels like eating what she wants its there. She can eat it or not eat it.....me , if its there Im eating it. Kinda makes a war over that being I dont have the will power not to and she claims thats my problem and she should not have to not have it around just being I might shove it in my mouth......thanks for letting me vent.
have you tried the adkins diet??
Tried it after reading one of the book.....oppps I guess they did make money off of me. It seemed like there are more then one idea of the adkins diet. I did loose weight but gained it back. Had a few other friends try it . One did it through a doctor and he lost a ton of weight eating only steak and eggs. He said he was learning to hate steak and eggs. Yep he gained it back a year later ....and then some.
I lost 10 lbs on the atkins diet. Gained it back. I would have stayed on it but during one month I had gout 6 times.
Gout makes you look like a crippled old man for sure.
Makes you LOOK like an old man?
It's very frustrating to be where you are now. I've been there myself. About eight years ago I saw which way my body and health was going and I didn't like it. I wanted to change so I'd try some things here and there with limited results.
So often the problem when we're in this spot is how to go about turning things around once we determine we want to change. It's likely been said that the hardest thing in the world to control is one's self, and I believe that to be true.
However, I also believe that once a person has the right information combined with a determination to succeed, the likelihood of succeeding goes way up. So I'll start with some info, based on what I've found that works. It's an ongoing, daily thing, but the key to it all is to build momentum so becoming discouraged is less likely as time goes on.
First of all, the basic foundation to weight management is this:
Eat less, move more.
Seems incredibly simplistic, yes? Of course, the devil is in the details. Eat how much less and move how much more? Eat less of what and move more how often? I'll start on the food.
Going by your post, you are likely eating a lot of calorie dense foods. If you hit the drive through window a lot, I'm certain of the calorie dense aspect. Here's the kicker...how come you can wolf down a double meat and cheese burger at lunch, jumbo fries, and a large Coke and yet feel starved by dinner time, if not before? It is because the massive amount of calories in that meal were mostly simple carbohydrates, which spikes your blood sugar immediately, and the body tends to store as fat. What is left isn't all that nutritional and leaves you still unsatisfied. So you eat more to feel sated. And the viscious cycle continues as your belly grows.
Back to the eat less move more thing. It is true that many people eat more calories than they burn in a day's time. However, simply eating less junk food and walking around the block more often than before isn't going to go far. It's a good start, but what I've learned is that QUALITY of food is just as important as QUANTITY in the less vs. more scenario.
Fresh fruits and vegetables do a good job satisfying hunger for a longer time, and with less calories to boot. So do whole grains (not the imitation kind or white bread). I do eat meat, but try not to make it the most dominant thing I eat each day.
Moving more...walking or jogging is good. It will increase your resting metabolic rate (how many calories you burn while at rest) over time. However, what really gives your calorie burning furnace a kick in the slats is weight training. The more muscle you build, the more the body must metabolize stored energy to promote muscle growth. You need not go Arnold (unless you want to...takes MASSIVE dedication to go that far) to see good benefits from pumping some iron.
A good way to start out on losing the spare tire is to wean yourself away from fast food joints. How? Pack a lunch with quality foods like discussed above. Pack an extra nutritious snack like an apple or banana for later in the day when you do feel some hunger pangs. Nuts in limited quantities also help (go easy on salted peanuts...dense in fat calories and sodium!).
And here's a very important thing...drink LOTS of water! You will feel less hungry and therefore won't be as tempted to overeat when you're around food. You'll have to make pit stops more often, but probably not any more often than if you're accustomed to drinking lots of soda all day.
Speaking of sodas...it's death by sugar. Read the label sometime and see how many grams of sugar are in the average soda. I recently heard a news report that diet sodas are no help, either. Personally, I can't drink sodas at all as the massive sudden sugar rush is more than I can take. Same goes for Krispy Kreme donuts. Can't stand that sugar rush, makes me feel like crap all day.
Which brings me to my final point in this long winded post (me apologies)...learn to listen to your body. I had to stop drinking sodas and eating sugar dense desserts and sweets when I made the connection between those things and not feeling well. Now, I shudder at the thought of those things...it's like if I were to drink gasoline.
In closing, if you want your body to run and look like a sports car, feed it high test fuel and move those wheels. I hope my words are helpful to you and whoever else might read it. I share it because I learned all this stuff by trial and error and I KNOW it's a struggle to get anywhere with it at all. But I also know it CAN be done and the reward is TEN TIMES worth the sacrifice of what you might think you like doing now. Best wishes!

I heard the skinny on this on the news today. Seems that the Adkins company will have to trim some fat for a better profit gain. Sounds like its not a total loss though. If the company exercises some better business practices it can reduce its liabilities.
I was on the Adkins diet not too long before my heart attack
Training is important!
Practical Training is a must!
I lost 20 pounds in the last 1.5 months. I got tired of being fat. I still got 20 pounds to go to get to my ideal weight. I still have a gut but at least I don't have to suck it in to read the scale anymore.
I started counting calories and stop eating when I reach 1000. This is usually after dinner anyways.
Once I get close to my ideal weight I will slowly increase my calories to something manageble.
My diet consists of healthy foods with the occassional sweet.
No soda, only water or milk or O.J.
I have a lot more energy than before.
Good luck.
Now bigbird is just the reverse. I can`t keep weight on. A few years back i was 195 lbs. then i dropped to 165 & now i weigh 145 & have not changed any eating habit or anything.

thanks everyone for your coments, especially shophound although I would have thought he would have said a little more. Funny that I have pretty much given up the fast food resterants for the last 5 years now. Now I ate pretty much every lunch at them for 22 years. Now Im pretty sure that didnt do my body any good as far as long term effects but being single pretty much made it the easiest way to dine out. Now the funny part for me is that I seem to have gained more weight over the years by staying out of fast food. Im sure more of that is cause by moving a lot less the older I get, at least other then work. I think a lot also may be that I have been setting in front of a computor a lot more over the last 7 years with the internet. Before that I would be doing something constantly then to be setting in a chair...... being honest thinking about it, thats probably the big change.
More?? After I typed that post I had to go out for a good walk so I wouldn't find myself planted in front of the computer all night.thanks everyone for your coments, especially shophound although I would have thought he would have said a little more.
I can say more if you'd like...I merely didn't want to come across as overwhelming you and others with info via an overly lengthy post. I'm no fitness guru, just passing on what I've learned through dedication and just plain luck.

Do this and it is simple and not that hard. I don't care what other people say about breakfast. When I started eating a big breakfast was when my problem stated. It just made me want lunch sooner. Now I drink a couple cups of coffee just to get the caffeine in me to get me going. Then I eat a late lunch 2:30 maybe 3:30 in the afternoon. Then eat again before 7 PM and nothing but maybe a glass of OJ or Crystal Lite after that.
I am slowly dropping because I removed one meal a day. If you cheat once in a while cheat without a Coke or sugar intake. When I eat the afternoon meal I eat or drink anything I want. Pretty much the same as when I eat the no later than 7 PM meal. If you want to speed this up, don't eat anything from a frying pan. Trust me..this works and especially if you are catching service calls in this heat. You eat what you want, just cut out a meal
