it has done this since you got the house?
First I want to say that this is a great site....lots of info in here.
I have lived in my house for 2.5 years(new construction). I house is usually around 70-72 degrees all of the time. At night, morning, and afteroon, it's 70-72 , but around 3pm, the house starts to get warmer. Between 3pm and 6pm the house temp will raise about 8 degress. Then the it takes the whole night to cool off.
Info on my house, the sun sets on the part of the house where there are 3 windows(not very big) and my garage.
Honestly, I have no idea why my house would heat up like this everyday in the summer...it's aggravating to say that least. When I talk to Carrier, they say that this air handler is perfect size for my house. So who knows what to do.
What do you guys think could be causing it? Thanks.
it has done this since you got the house?
Yeah, only in the summer, just for clarification.
After writing this post, my friend told me to check the differential. I have 55 degrees blowing out of the vents and 70 degrees going into the intake.
If I remember correctly, he said it should be a 12-15 degree difference. I called him back, didnt pick up.
An update....
Earlier, I checked on vent in the kitchen and it was 55 and the intake of 70. I went around the house and checked some more vents about 2 hrs later. Here are the results:
Intake - 70
Kitchen - 59(was 55)
Living Room Vent A - 59
Living Room Vent B - 63
M. Bed - 61
M. Bath - 59
S. Bed - 57
Study - 59
There are few more vents to check, but they all seem close but not exact.
mmm... just curious, brick home?
"The Bitterness of poor quality remains long after the sweetness of low price is forgotten"
Yeah, it's a brick home.
I read this at another site....is this true?
· If it is less than 14° differential, the possible causes are 1) refrigerant loss, 2) a dirty coil, 3) a laboring compressor, 4) an oversized fan, or 5) a deficient return air system.
What are the temperatures outside during the days the house heats up?
85 to 90, it will raise a about 3 degrees.
On a normal day, around 90-95, it will rise about 4-5 degrees.
The last couple of days have been a 100, and it went up to 78 degrees in the house. So the A/C runs all day and night long and then in the morning, it's 70-72 in the house.
My room has always been the hottest room in the house, me and the wife thought it was due to the cathedral ceilings...it seems that not enough cool air is coming in. I have a spare bedroom that nobody wants to sleep in because its so cold....even with the vent closed.

I assume your ducts are in the attic.
You should have your duct system checked for leakage and insulation inadequacies by someone with a Minneapolis Duct Blaster or equivalent. There should be no measurable leakage on the return side and only a small amount on the supply side. You might find someone near you in the contractors list on this website: http://www.energyconservatory.com/
You might also have someone find out why you get poor air flow out of some supply vents. They may be able to fix that at minimal cost. It could just be leakage.
Yeah, I'm waiting for someone from Carrier to call me back.....I have owned the house 2.5 years...always been a problem....but I'm tired of it.
I hope they dont try to stick me with a bill....but it never has ran right in the day. I have talked to them several times in the past and they have said that the unit is perfect size for the house. Being naive as I was, I just accepted it. But being how hot it is now, I can't even sleep because the house is hot....I didnt pay alot of money for a house that has a crappy A/C. LOL
Not unusual for a house to rise a couple of degrees during the hottest part of the day. sounds like you are having problems with heat gain on the ductwork during the hottest part of the day. Check the insulation on the ductwork also check the return air is well sealed and you are not getting heat gain through the return.
"Go big or Go Home"
maybe add return vent to your bedroom would help?,...if it is 100 out and it only gets up to 78 i wouldn't worry about it too much,....course depends on average how many days a year you are in 100's...JMO,..hope this helps.
how cold do you expect it ? if it's keeping the house around 20 degrees cooler than outside temps your getting as good as your gonna get. it's not carriers fault you may need to get better insulation, tint the windows, blinds or next time over size the unit which will lead to humidity problems and mold. that's why i believe alot of contractors over size is they worry about unrealistic customers comming after them because they can't keep the house at 70 when it's 104 degree heat index outside.
we had a customer this week that had the same complaint. basically he felt we undersized his system. a little over 800 sq ft. we put a 2 ton system in. he thinks he should be able to keep it at 70 and it stay there even though it's 98 degrees out. so he's upset but i'll let them deal with that part..lol
Just for my own clarification I thought the split tempature, or as I seen others call it spread. Was supposed to be 18-22 degrees, my tech told me 20 is the bulls eye.
And like you said 78 degree inside temp on a 100 degree day fits what I've been told just fine.
Also, if that bedroom noone sleeps in is too cold, maybe its the closest to the unit.
How could one balance the air evenly when you have a room with a short duct run, say 5' or less to the supply. A dampener might whistle. Can you undersize that duct??
centralflinstaller, I am not being too unrealistic. The only part that I do not like is that when the house does heat up, it takes pretty much all night long to cool off. When I say all night long, I mean, it will be 3am before it feels good. Should it take 6-7 hours? I guess so....its better than not having AC, LOL.(I remember those days growing up...hot ass summers sweating at night)
I had a nice long talk with the Carrier guy and we talked about the situation. He brought alot of things to light. He said he does want to come out and restrict some of the air going into my spare bedroom because it is freezing in the summer, and very hot in the winter. That extra air will be nice.
diegocentral,
I have not heard anything about the 20 degree spread. So if its 104 outside, and the house is 78...not doing too bad huh?
Well, what everyone here and the Carrier guy says makes sense. That is why I through it out there...just to get some idea of is something wrong or not. To be perfectly honest, I think I was misled by my friend. Before I started this adventure, I called him up and asked him if his house heats up in the afternoon. I explained to him that mine does it everyday around 3pm. He told me his didnt, remained at 73 all day. So that is what made me think something was wrong with mine.
Thanks for everyone who has replied back.
