I have an old "Trane" A.C. unit. I don't know much about the operation of residential A.C. units, and I've got a question. My wife and I just bought our first house a few months ago and haven't had any problems with the unit until a few days ago. The unit probably needs to be replaced or have the freon recharged cos at times it doesn't cool the house at all. However, yesterday, I turned the A.C. off at the thermostat when it wasn't putting out any cool air, then turned it on a few hours later and it worked fine, in fact, we woke up freezing this morning and I only had the stat set at 63 degrees. I've noticed a lot of ice build up on one of the copper (?) lines going into (or out of) the unit outside. My question is - Is there a temporary fix to help us sleep for the next few days? A set point that will keep the house cool? We have 3 young kids, and are in the middle of a heat wave in Delaware. I'd appreciate anyone's advice on this. It's around 85 degrees in our house tonight and humid as hell outside. You can e mail me when i put my email address in my profile bio - Thank you!!!!!! Joe

Change the filter, hose off the outside condenser and call someone before it blows up.

Well now isn't this special. You're not in the right place.
The best advice is to shut it off as to not damage it anymore and call a pro. Ask your new neighbors who they trust and use.

"ice buildup" = low charge - poor airflow - low evap. load bottom line is you need to call a service tech. to effect any needed repairs
I dont always drink beer, but when I do I prefer Dos-Equis. I am the most interesting man in the world. Stay thirsty my friends.
