Short answer to your question.....NO. sounds like it's time to move.....
I am living in a rental property where the landlord will not pay to have the a/c fixed. I seem to have a leak in the system b/c I have had to have the unit charged twice in two months. Bith times I have had 2-3 pounds put in. I do not want to keep paying for this myself. Is there any way I can a freon myself?? Can I use automotive freon??? I just need this to last the summer and I dont care if I ruin my landlords a/c unit? He thinks its broke anyhow. Thanks

If everything was always done "by the book"....the book would never change.
I agree, but I'm stuck here till October.
the fact you had to ask if automotive refrigerent will work answers your own question. And what is it you would change out if you changed anything, where's the leak?
Check your lease. What does it say about equitment. Maybe I'm old school here but assume if you moved in with an AC unit attached to the rental it would be up to the landlord to keep it functional unless stated otherwise in the lease.
Find a legal advice borad and present your question there
first unless you are certified its illegal
2nd unless you are certified you can not but correct refrigerant
As a property owner, he should have certain requirements to maintain the property. You need to contact the BBB or something similar to check your rights. You may have the right to break the lease if he's not maintaining the property. Laws vary from state to state.
I have tried making him fix the unit. There is nothing in the lease that states he will not fix it. It was a verbal agreement when I moved in. But at the time I was told that he just had it serviced and it worked fine. Problem is it was october, no need for ac then, now july and i'm sweating. Guess i'm SOL till I can find someplace else in October. Thanks for all the help guys
Quit paying rent and tell him you'll pay when it is fixed. Then move out in October.
buy a window unit at walmart they are real cheap.
u could buy two for the price it will cost to charge your landlords old ac unit plus power bill will be cheaper, and u can take em with u.
First off if you are thinking about adding 134a into a central AC system then you need to do some reading. No you can't add freon to it yourself unless you are EPA certified, but I've already guessed you're not. It's illegal for one and if you don't know the difference between the two I suggest seeking professional assistance.Originally posted by rbreak7

no you need to certified , second the guy who keeps adding freon needs to find the leak fix it and stop adding freon
call a lawyer or the bbb!!
I don’t always drink beer, but when I do I prefer Dos-Equis. I am the most interesting man in the world. Stay thirsty my friends.
The landlord is only required to provide heat, not a/c. I was a slumlord for many years and I know. Like said buy a couple window shakers and take them with you when you move.
Stop paying rent, but you have to put the rent money in an escrow account at your bank. Send him a cetified letter, when he files suit for non-payment of rent also send his lawyer a letter stating the money is in escrow. Let him explain to the judge why he wouldn't fix the A/C.
By a window unit and save the reciept for it and the service calls you paid for to show the judge.
