I have an XL14i Trane model 4TTX4048A. I am beginning to suspect the coil is undersized ( freezes in very hot weather ) or is one lacking a TXV/TEV. Unit was bought as a package with a gas furnace. The coil is Trane model RXC05453HPCO. Does anyone know if this coil should be sufficient for the condensing unit under most circumstances? Thanks.

freezing could be caused by low air flow due to dirty coil or dirty filter etc.(under chared) If fixed bore orfice it could very well be oversized orfice allowing liquid back to compressor dropping line temperature below 32 degrees F. Also if equiped with TXV it could be a loose sensing bulb and or many other things

    Check your air filter first.
Then call the installing contractor if the filter is not the cause.
    How old is the unit.

An over sized piston won't cause it to freeze on very hot days.

Coil has a TEV inside the cabinet from the factory. As posted, it is an ARI match. You need to get a pro on site to evaluate cause for freezing IF filters are clean and your registers are open.

Yeah, I just gave him the link for checking what coils are matches.

Thats what I thought the original question was about, weather the indoor coil was right for the outdoor.

Weather its a match for his load conditions or not, is another story.

I wish I could figure out how to save the reports from Trane's performance data CD in a form that would show up formated correctly in a post.

The reports generated by the program show the performance of the equipment matchup at 3 different WB and 4 different DB temperatures with 85, 95, 105 and 115 ambient conditions. It also shows the performance at specific design conditions you input.
If more government is the answer, then it's a really stupid question.

Dash, no kidding, I wish every manufacturer did it like that too.
Since I started taking hard looks at system performance data, I realized that a lot of the lower priced equipment out there isn't cheeper just because of thinner metal and less marketing.
Also some of the equipment a few people here like to call overpriced, isn't more expensive just because of how much the manufacturers spend on marketing.
The more expensive manufacturers equipment generally has more R&D behind it, and performs better at conditions other than the standard ARI conditions the SEER ratings are done at. This is very important to me because the design conditions for my area are considderably different from what the ARI test conditions are.
If more government is the answer, then it's a really stupid question.
