Isn't a line set always for refrigerant?

Upss! I missed the set part!!!
Anyways, reading my notes lineset "p" traps are
used when condenser is installed higher than the
evaporator, providing an aid in oil return back to the
compressor. Most manufacturers now recommend to go down in
line size instead of using "p" traps.

Most mfg's do not recommend them as mentioned. When you read about traps int eh suction, you are generally reading from an older text. As ha been pointed out, follow the mfg's recommendations.

igwt777, on a heat pump, half the time the condenser is installed higher than the evaporator, and for the rest of the year it's the opposite. How does that work?

ICP still recommends them on their units.
The instruction manuals are very specific about how many and to the locations for different install requirements.
