    Question

I have a bryant 3400E central air system that is almost 5 years old. The outside condenser unit is making a loud popping noise that starts w/n a minute of kicking on and will pop intermittantly until the unit cools the house to the desired temp. The sound is similar to what automobile jumper cables sound like when you touch them together to check for battery power but my unit is making it a lot louder.

It appears to be cooling efficiently although I have noticed that the breaker has tripped off at the main box twice in the past week. I thought it was the power surges we have had lately but now I'm thinking that something is shorting out in the conderser unit?

Also, I have noticed that when the unit shuts off, the compressor valves make a clanking noise.

What does this sound like to you?

I am a do-it-yourself type of person unless it am getting over my head. I used to work on HVAC units with my father as a young boy so I have enough knowledge to be dangerous. If he were still alive, he would be walking me through the repair on the phone unless my last option is to replace the compressor/unit.

Thanks for your advise and help.

    Robert

Honestly, if you have to ask this question, call a pro before you kill yourself. First, kill power to the unit. Then, call a pro.
