My new house will be finished some time in Oct. Sould I wait till the first of the year for a new Trane seer 13 air conditioner? I can't get the XL13i now and they want $1000 to upgrade from a XR12 to a XL14i.

you should be able to get it!
Somebody's blowing smoke up your backside. Virtually all equipment that will be available after Jan. 2006 is available today, including 13 seer equipment. This is the type of information I am afraid of coming from dealers and vendors that want to get rid of all the old inventory. Give the customer what they want!
Everyone has a purpose in life..........even if it's to be a bad example.
Seek first to understand, before seeking to be understood.
Are you in a warm climate with high electricity costs? If you're not then nothing wrong with the 12 seer.JMO
If everything was always done "by the book"....the book would never change.
Take a look at ARI ratings. You'll find that the XR12 with TEV equipped coil and furnace with a VS blower will nearly match the ratings of the XL14i with the same goodies.
Here are some ARI numbers for you:
Let's see that's $1000 divided by $12 per year difference in op costs...that's 83.3 years to payback.THE TRANE COMPANY XR12 RCU-A-CB 248107 4TTR2036A1 TUY080R9V3+RXC036S3 13.00 36000 $238
THE TRANE COMPANY XL14i RCU-A-CB 548437 4TTX4036B1 TUY080R9V3+RXC036S3 13.75 36200 $226
If you don't upgrade to VS and TEV coil, then the SEER values are identical!!
I wouldn't upgrade or wait!

Don't forget opportunity cost -- if you invest the $1K at 3.25% instead you'd have a net postive return of $20 a year....Originally posted by jrbenny

The XL14i also has better warranties and is quieter.

XL14i 2.5T R410A 76db
XR12 2.5T R410A 74db
10 yr p and l is probably less than the upgrade...
makes the warranties equal.
Yes, and if you set those 2 units side by side running, most people will say the XL14i is the quieter of the 2 units.Originally posted by travisfl

db ratings are misleading to the point of being virtually meaningless at times because they do not differentiate between different types and frequencys of noise.
The recip compressor in the 2.5 ton XR12 is quieter than the scroll in the 2.5 ton XL14i, but the airflow through the 14i is quieter than through the XR12.
Its all very subjective.
Currently, there [i]is[/] no XL13i; however, what used to be the XL13i will be re-labeled the XR13. I think it's really the XR12 re-labeled & packaged for the upcoming change of minimum SEER.
FWIW, both the R22 and R410A versions of the 2.5T XR12 have CLIMATUFF® scrolls.Originally posted by mark beiser

We havn't put in many XR12 units, almost everything we do is XL14, 16, or 19i.
They used to code it into the model number of the units before the change in equipment in '02, now you can't tell what compressor comes in it till you get it.
Close, Mark...it's the 2.0 T and below condensers that have the recip.Originally posted by mark beiser
