I hear a lot about short cycling, but never what amount of time it is. For example would 30 mins on and 50 mins off be short cycling in a/c mode. Can you guy's give me some specifics on time frames? Thanks in advance.

It would depend on your outdoor temp, your indoor temp, what you have your unit set for on the t-stat, sq ft of your home, size of your unit! Need more info.

short cycling is starting a utilitization device, most commonly a motor, more often than its manufacturer's ratings, because the windings do not have time to cool down from the starting current surge.

usually the limit is 4 starts per hour, or once ea 15 min. seems like RoBoTeq stated specific values 2 y ago --

just 45 years as a trained, practicing Electrical Engineer, with residential & manufacturing facilities responsibility.
How many 100- 1000 hp motors have you been responsible for in startup & maintenance? how many production lines have you kept running? some involving 800 workers? how about getting a whole mfg plant back up & running after a power outage?
