Tell them congrats and thank you for all the money...when they get done spending mega $$$ they are still the proud owners of a 17 year old, in-efficient unit. (As compared to todays standards)
customer wants a 1988 rheem compressor change out it shot.
thing is would it not be more practical for me to change the condenser and compessor all at once for a little bit more.
I diagnoised the compressor burnt run winding to common and or start winding to common nothing, with my ohm meter locked out burnt.
anyway its a 3ton but homeowner only wants me to change the compressor and well i will give em what they want but is this dumb or what its 1988 17 years old already the condenser.
well guys a retired mechanic and trying to save a buck would you only change the comp.

I don't know. I have a window unit that my family bought used around 1965. It is a 27,000 btu unit. We cleaned it every 3 to 5 years and used it to cool the mobile home we were living in at the time. I moved it to my hobby shop around 1997 and cut a hole in the wall to fit the window unit. About a year after that the compressor went out. When I looked at the unit we had never replaced anything in it and I decided to replace the compressor. I didn't care if it wasn't as efficient as the new ones but after 40 years and it is still running and doesn't leak refrigerant. Now they just don't make them like that anymore. I had about $300 into a compressor and a few accessories. Try to find a 27,000 btu ac for that price and this one still fits the hole in the wall. It still works great.
The warranty alone should sell the unit.
1 year for compressor
5-10 year on unit.
btw , is this the one that had the refrigerant added while frozen? Just curious.

One would assume you repaired it yourself or thru company...his repair is going to be considerably more I believe.Originally posted by lakeman1234

I fixed mine while going to refrigeration school. But like I said they don't make them like that any more. I put that old unit up against any new window unit. It may not be as energy effieient but it will blow just as cold air. Not bad for a unit that is over 40 years old.
The guy needs to be sold. As a retired mechanic, (I am assuming auto) he is not familiar with what happens when an electric compressor burns out and contaminates the system. Automotive you just bolt on a new compressor and press on.Originally posted by TheDuke

Explain to him the contamination that is now in the system, its possible consequences on old coils etc increased likely hood of leaks etc.
Put together all the information, costs, and benefits.
Most mechanics. (like us) are practical people, and when shown the facts in a way they can understand, will go for the new system. (complete, condensor, lineset and a-coil)
Thats why I make my compressor change out high priced and condensor reasonably priced, he is already sold on a new comp, use reduction to the rediculus to sell the new cond. Sell the difference in price for what he is getting!!!
