getting a new hvac at my house/question

I have a 13 yr old Rheem system that has failed. It is an electric heat pump outside unit model is RPGC-042JAS. What ton size is it and a contractor wanted to replace it with a 3 ton Bryant Evolution series with puron. Should it be a 3 or 4 ton. He said Bryant doesn't come in half tons. Please help with info.The old system worked fine in the summer and a little cool in the winter months.Hard time keeping up on cold windy days.SHOULD HE BEING GOING DOWN TO A 3 TON UNIT?

looks like 3 1/2 ton, how is your new contractor coming with his load calculation?

The 42 in the model number means it is a 2-1/2 ton condenser

when sizing a/c you down size . when sizing furnaces you up size. say in heating its found you need 84,ooo btus. your furnace choice would be an 80 or 90,ooo. you would need the 90. in ac if you need 2.8 tons of cooling youd install a 2 1/2 ton over a 3. the downsized coil will remove more humidity than the higher one cause the larger one will satisfy the stat faster not giving as much time to condense the water out of the air

bryant/carrier certaintly come in half ton sizes.

The 2 stage evolution puron doesn't come in a 3.5 ton.

Did he do a load calc, to see if your old unit was the right size.

If your house needs 3.5 ton, then putting in a 4 ton 2 stage is ok, with the proper duct alterations.

If he didn't do a load calc, and refuses to do one keep calling contractors.

Other manufactures also have 2 stage heat pumps.

Don't get stuck on brand name.
