Brand new, noisy ac unit, help?

Hello. We just moved into a brand new apartment building in Manhattan. We have a one bedroom apartment with (brand new) air conditioners in the living room and bedroom. Each unit is contained entirely within the apartment, and there is no ventilation ducts to the outside (purposefully done for air quality). Every time the compressor goes on, the unit makes two very loud clicks. We are still sleeping in our old apartment because it would be impossible to sleep in the new place. Does anybody have any suggestions on how to fix the sound? The maintenance people have taken the units apartment, and they have said that nothing is to be done. Other tenants have also been complaining. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
